1. Purpose
Bears Play Cafe is committed to providing a safe, welcoming, and secure environment for all children and families. This safeguarding policy outlines our commitment to protecting children from harm and ensuring their welfare at all times.
2. Scope
This policy applies to all staff, volunteers, and visitors at Bears Play Cafe.
3. Our Commitment
We will:
- Provide a safe physical environment for children
- Ensure all staff understand safeguarding responsibilities
- Respond appropriately to concerns about a child’s welfare
- Promote a culture where children’s safety is paramount
4. Definitions of Abuse
Safeguarding includes protection from:
- Physical abuse
- Emotional abuse
- Sexual abuse
- Neglect
5. Staff Responsibilities
All staff will:
- Be vigilant and aware of safeguarding concerns
- Treat all children with respect and dignity
- Report any concerns immediately to the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL)
- Never be alone with a child in a secluded area
6. Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL)
The DSL is responsible for:
- Handling safeguarding concerns
- Liaising with local authorities if necessary
- Keeping accurate and confidential records

7. Reporting Concerns
If a safeguarding concern arises:
- Record the concern clearly and factually
- Report it immediately to the DSL
- In urgent situations, contact local authorities or emergency services
8. Safer Recruitment
We are committed to safe recruitment practices, including:
- Background checks where appropriate (e.g., DBS checks)
- Verifying identity and references
9. Supervision of Children
- Children must be supervised by a parent or guardian at all times
- Staff are not responsible for supervising children unless explicitly stated (e.g., during organised sessions)
10. Photography and Social Media
- Parents/guardians must give consent before photos are taken
- No images of children will be used without permission
11. Confidentiality
Safeguarding information will be handled sensitively and shared only on a need-to-know basis.
